Folkies from the darkside, Freakwater surprised fans with an unexpected return this year. The duo of Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin hadn’t released an album in 11 years before dropping this year’s Scheherazade, a magnificent return to mountain-based acoustic sounds and rickety harmonies. Their music feels like a summer night on the back porch of a creaky house in the Appalachian hills, despite, or perhaps because of, stripped-down arrangements and ominous themes of death, depression, and a generally gloomy outlook. The duo’s sound is as alive and compelling now as when they first started.
