Mike “Double K†Turner and Chris “Thes One†Portugal, better known to most as the Los Angeles-based indie hip-hop duo People Under the Stairs, had a stellar year following the release of 12 Step Program. Over the years critics have griped of PUTS’ allegiance to Clinton-era aesthetics. But at the dog-end of the blog rap era, the album’s palette of sophisticated lyrics, samples, and booming beats came as a refreshing reminder of what made hip-hop in the ’90s so fresh and progressive.
