Berkeley, Calif.-bred producer Jake Atlas, better known as Thriftworks, offers a downtempo counterpart to the glut of heavy-hitting beats that dominates electronic music. His latest release, 2013’s Deviation, explores his own mellow deconstruction of the FlyLo-branded trip-hop that’s enraptured California’s beat scene. He’s thrived in electronic music’s underground, slowly gaining notoriety through the festival circuit that finds a union between flower-child psychonauts and diehard electronic devotees. His glistening textures float along like Technicolor ghosts, spectral yet firmly grounded by an 808 palette. Thriftworks asserts his own supernatural style, anchoring edges with grooves.
