Digital Building Blocks: Adventures in Blockly (Rising 1st to 2nd Grade)

Go beyond an Hour of Code™ this summer and learn the ins and outs of coding logic using Blockly-based programming. Blockly, Google’s visual programming library, is a user-friendly visual programming language which uses digital blocks that ‘snap’ together to represent various code concepts like sequencing, loops, conditional statements, and more.

Every morning of this camp will be filled with creative exploration as campers investigate coding through plugged and unplugged activities. Each day campers will explore the basics of programming, from discovering the meaning of code using homemade treasure maps, to conditional statements using litteBits, color-coded modules that snap together magnetically to create simple circuits. Campers will take on loops as we design our own collaborative stories using code in Scratch, a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations.

Building on skills gained throughout the week, campers will end camp by participating in MODA’s Coding Games, where they will use different coding concepts they’ve learned throughout the week to complete a series of challenges.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Blair Banks, Education Coordinator

Blair strives to combine her studies of race and ethnicity with design in order to create programming for children that is not only relevant to their experiences, but also presents them with ideas that originate beyond their backyards. She crafts unique field trip experiences that support and reinforce classroom learning through hands on activities, and tours of MODA’s rotating exhibitions. Blair also heads up MODA’s Education Partnerships – a series of meaningful collaborative efforts between MODA and various schools and organizations that strive to incorporate design as a problem solving tool for addressing 21st century challenges.

Minimum Enrollment: Should the program you request not meet a minimum enrollment, you will be contacted at least one month prior to the start of your camp session.

Once campMODA confirms your camper’s enrollment:

• Registrations that are cancelled 2 weeks prior to the start of the session will result in a refund of the amount paid minus the $100 non-refundable registration fee (Amount paid - $100 non-refundable registration fee = Refund).
• No refunds will be available for cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to the start of the session.
