Lunch & Learn: Typography Fundamentals @ General Assembly

This workshop covers the fundamentals of typography for the novice designer and other professionals, with an emphasis on web and mobile app executions. Typographic concepts will be examined at three levels of granularity: that of the letterform, the sentence, and the paragraph. At the level of the letterform, a common typographic vocabulary will be introduced. Concepts to be covered include the definition of glyphs, understanding the difference between typefaces and fonts, basic typographic anatomy, and standard typographic classifications. The application of the typographic principles, i.e, size, weight, style, and placement, to create hierarchy will be introduced when examining type at the sentence level. Finally, at the level of the paragraph, advanced concepts to include line length, line height, and paragraph spacing will be discussed alongside common typographic sins and virtues.
