From the venue:

In 2018, Michael Volpe’s trajectory to commercial success feels anachronistic. Better known as Clams Casino, Volpe spent much of 2008 emailing out his moody, ethereal beats to whatever rapper’s email address he could find on Myspace. Naturally, Lil’ B was one of the few to respond. The pair’s collaboration rocketed Volpe’s talent to a new audience on songs like “I’m God,” where his hypnotic sampling of Imogen Heap’s “Just for Now” floats over a crash of synthesized drums. As Volpe landed more high-profile collaborations with A$AP Rocky, his synthesis of angelic vocal samples and lo-fi hip-hop grooves catalyzed an army of copycats still percolating through Soundcloud. After releasing a series of mixtapes, Volpe came into his own with his 2016 debut LP 32 Levels. The caliber of features he landed for the record, including Kelela and Vince Staples, reflected how in-demand his style had become over the last decade. Yet beyond the big names, 32 Levels cemented Volpe’s ability to constantly innovate. His core aesthetic still relies on the interplay of airy melodies and heavy drums, but he manages to tweak the formula just enough to outpace his imitators. — Paul DeMerritt
