Fela Kuti is the stuff of music legend. The Nigerian-born Afrobeat pioneer reached mythical status with daringly political music that led to his constant harassment from the Nigerian military. Though Kuti has since passed, his musical legacy lives on through two of his sons, Femi and Seun Kuti. As a teenager, Seun became the lead vocalist for his father’s band, Egypt 80, and continues to tour with many of the same musicians who played alongside Fela. Though he works to spread Fela’s tradition of rhythm and revolution, Seun has established his own career with an impressive discography. His most recent LP, 2018’s Black Times, distills Afrobeat into its most potent essence of cathartic horn wails, intricate percussion, and a revolutionary fervor that continues to captivate new audiences of Kuti disciples. — Paul DeMerritt
