Listening to the Heart of the Sun from the Earth’s South Pole

The sun is a noisy place. Boiling and bubbling gases at the Sun’s surface are continuously producing sonic booms. The resulting sound waves, whose frequencies are too low to be heard by human ears, travel throughout the Sun and can be used to study the interior of the star: in much the same way as ultrasound is used to look inside our bodies.

Professor Jefferies will discuss what he’s learned about the heart of the Sun and provide reasons why scientists go to the South Pole to listen to it. He will also share his travel log of what it is like to live and work at the South Pole.
