During this Creativity Conversation, moderated by WABE’s award-winning journalist Rose Scott, Kimberly Wallace-Sanders, Emory associate professor of American Studies and African American Studies, and Mary Schmidt Campbell, president of Spelman College, the country’s leading liberal arts college for black women, will talk about their shared interests in African American photography and African American cultural studies.

This program was inspired by the exhibition “Framing Shadows: Portraits of African American Nannies from the Robert Langmuir African American Photograph Collection,” curated by Wallace-Sanders. The show, on display in Emory’s Woodruff Library through Dec. 31, offers insight into the experiences of the largely anonymous 19th and early 20th century African Americans who served as child care providers for white families. Their portraits are captured in compelling photographs from the Langmuir collection housed in the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library at Emory.
