Presented by Dr. Lisa Yaszek, School of Literature, Media and Communication at Georgia Tech

In this presentation, Dr. Lisa Yaszek will explore the history of time travel as it has been imagined by science fiction artists across media for the past 150 years. Dr. Yaszek begins by mapping the evolution of time travel stories in print from Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889) to Octavia Butler’s Kindred (1979) and Connie Willis’s Blackout series (2010). She then considers time travel stories in other media, including radio shows such as Doug Adam’s Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Universe (1978); films such as Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, and video games such as Ninetendo’s Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Taken together, Yaszek argues, stories about time travel challenge us to think about philosophical issues including free will versus predestination, memory and identity, and the relationship of love, loss, and death.
