From the venue:
Brooklyn’s Habibi have effortlessly melded garage rock, ’60s girl-group harmonies, and Middle Eastern psych since their formation in 2011. Raised in Detroit by Iranian parents, lead vocalist Rahill Jamalifard employs her love of both Western rock ’n’ roll and traditional Iranian song structures in fashioning buoyant, shimmering pop songs. Like contemporaries Shannon and the Clams and La Luz (with whom they shared a split EP), Habibi offer up low-key infectious surf tunes with an air of enigmatic cool. Their latest release, last year’s Cardamom Garden EP, finds Jamalifard and her bandmates further exploring her Iranian roots, featuring lyrics largely sung in Farsi and buoyed by propulsive percussion. — EM
