Stiff Little Fingers were born amid the Northern Ireland Conflict that had reached a fever pitch in the late ’70s. With car bombs and street violence erupting around every corner in their hometown of Belfast, songs such as “Suspect Device,” “State of Emergency,” and “Alternative Ulster” from 1979’s Inflammable Material LP resonate with the high-tension punk catharsis of the times. Now, the group is on the road celebrating the “40 Years of Inflammable Material” tour. San Francisco’s most ferocious classic punk outfit Avengers, led by iconic singer and songwriter Penelope Houston, perform as well. Avengers songs such as “We Are the One,” “Thin White Line,” and a blistering cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” are true gems in the secret history of West Coast punk.
