CL RECOMMENDS
CL Critic Kevin C. Madigan Recommends: In partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and Georgia Council for the Arts, the Atlanta History Center is hosting the semifinal of the annual Poetry Out Loud contest. The virtual event determines who gets crowned state champion and wins a $200 cash prize. The victorious poet then goes on an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington DC to compete in the national finals. Poetry Out Loud “incorporates the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word and theater into English and drama classes,” the AHC says on its website. The competition helps students “improve public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about the role great poetry plays in literature.” — KCM

From the venue:

Join us for the final competition in Georgia to see who will be crowned state champion and go onto compete at the national finals in Washington, D. C. The structure of Poetry Out Loud is similar to a spelling bee. This annual program starts in the fall, with high school teachers using the free Poetry Out Loud teacher toolkit and related materials to teach poetry recitation and run classroom competitions. Classroom winners advance to a schoolwide competition; school champions compete at the regional level by mid-February. Regional finalists then compete at the Georgia Poetry Out Loud State Finals for a chance to compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C.
