CL RECOMMENDS
CL Critic Matthew Warhol Recommends: The latest Mild High Club album is a welcomed departure from their earlier work that was steeped in Beatles-like psychedelia and Mac DeMarco slacker rock. On “Going Going Gone” the Chicago band leans heavier on 70s lounge acts. Synthesizers and pianos drive the songs instead of guitars. There are latin rhymes breakdowns and saxophones. New elements transition between song sections, still laidback, but never boring. — MW

From the venue:

Mild High Club is the solo project and live band helmed by Alex Brettin, a Los Angeles-based musician originally from Chicago. Influenced by AOR and jazz, Brettin began working on Mild High Club material in 2012 by himself, using guitars, keyboards, computers, and a four-track recorder, while shuttling between Chicago, Baltimore, and Los Angeles. The debut Mild High Club album, Timeline, was released on Stones Throw in 2015. A year later, Stones Throw released the more ambitious second LP, Skiptracing, which includes the certified-Gold single ‘Homage’. In 2017, Brettin collaborated with Australian psychedelic group King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard on the album Sketches of Brunswick East.
