Heather Lancaster - Galactic Noticing
In her latest series titled "Galactic Noticing," Heather Lancaster's focus turns to the black swan. With its black feathers, white flight feathers and bright red bill, the nomadic black swan (Cygnus atratus) breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest wetlands of Australia. In astronomy, galactic noticing involves scientifically observing or "noticing" subtle patterns or discrepancies in a galaxy's structure over time. Across eight large-scale works on paper, Heather renders these extraordinary waterbirds with attention to nuanced detail, creating an intriguing interplay between the figure and surrounding negative space. A stimulating contrast to Heather's previous suite of white swans, "Galactic Noticing" is a tribute to the simultaneously simple, yet profound act of noticing; an appeal to the viewer to recognize that we are each an individual part of a vast and miraculous whole.
Opening Receptions: Friday, November 21, 6-8 p.m. & Saturday, November 22, 12-4 p.m.
