Veggie burgers are like decaffeinated coffee, nonalcoholic beer and Paul McCartney’s music since the Beatles – even when you’re enjoying them, it’s hard not to feel like you’re settling for second-best. The veggie burgers at BURGER JOE’S live with the same handicap that all veggie burgers do: They’re not meat. But that’s overcome here with burgers that are every bit as juicy and sloppy as their meaty counterparts. We couldn’t find the nutritional info, but the taste and the grease stains on our napkins hint that a Burger Joe’s veggie burger topped with blue cheese, mushrooms, mayo and ketchup is as caloric and indulgent as a ground-beef burger. It certainly doesn’t taste any less so.

CAFE SUNFLOWER’s pair of user-friendly vegetarian restaurants has both ardent fans and equally vocal detractors, but there’s no denying they serve up a mean veggie burger. The soy-based patty is a dead ringer for its beefy counterpart in looks, if not quite in taste. Served on an herbed bun with the usual burger trimmings, and gussied up with cheese, sauteed onions and portabellas, this baby puts the carnivores in their place ... if only for one meal. “2140 Peachtree Road. 404-352-8859; 5975 Roswell Road. 404-256-1675. www.cafesunflower.com.less...
