Remainders: Gay Atlanta councilman blasts Chick-fil-a, execution delayed, T-SPLOST rally tomorrow in downtown

Too much news, not enough time

Too much news, not enough time. A quick look at what’s been sitting in the queue, staring at us, laughing at us:

  • Atlanta City Councilman Alex Wan, City Hall’s only openly gay elected official, tells our friends at the Georgia Voice that he’s none too pleased with College Park-based Chick-fil-a after the CEO’s recent comments about gay marriage. From the Voice:

“Of course, as a proud member of the LGBT community, I am incredibly disappointed in Dan Cathy’s president of Chick-fil-A position opposing marriage equality. And regardless of the fact that Chick-fil-A is based in Atlanta, that position is, to me, completely incompatible with the values of the City of Atlanta, ‘the city too busy to hate,’ and the key role we played in the civil rights movement,” Wan said.

“As the city council’s only openly gay member, I support boycotting patronizing the chain and would oppose their efforts to expand further within the city limits,” Wan added.

“If Mr. Cathy and his company view me, my partner and my community as second class citizens, then obviously it would follow that our money and patronage wouldn’t be good enough for them either,” said Wan.

The Voice notes that Mayor Kasim Reed, who supports civil unions but not gay marriage, hasn’t jumped into the fray.

  • The case involving Warren Lee Hill, the Georgia inmate who was scheduled to be executed this week for killing a fellow prisoner in 1990, continues.

  • Mayor Kasim Reed will lead a pro-T-SPLOST rally tomorrow at Centennial Olympic Park to urge a “yes” vote on the regional transportation tax that voters will decide next Tuesday. He’ll be joined by former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young, Fulton County Chairman John Eaves, DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis, Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd, Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, Atlanta BeltLine CEO Brian Leary, MARTA GM Beverly Scott, Ashley Robbins of Citizens for Progressive Transit, Jeannette Gayer of Environment Georgia, Jim Stokes of the Livable Communities Coalition, and Metro Atlanta Chamber President Sam Williams. The two-hour event kicks off at 2 p.m. After that he’ll visit Peoplestown to discuss recent flooding issues with residents.

  • The Atlanta Police officer who was involved in a car crash last weekend that killed a local woman has been fired. Joshua Sieck has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide.
