MARTA officials hope to win voter support for light rail plan, plus more news

Heading to the Decatur Book Festival this weekend? Be sure to say hi to MARTA. Staff members will be in the area to discuss the Clifton Corridor Transit Initiative, a project that could provide the corridor between Lindbergh and Avondale MARTA stations with light rail like a tram or streetcar. Voters in 2016 may be asked to approve or deny a half-percent sales tax increase to fund the project.

?Speaking of MARTA, plans are moving forward for mixed-used developments at the Brookhaven and Chamblee stations. The transit agency has selected the projects’ developers, including the group who is also working on the former General Motors plant in Doraville. The redevelopments will include apartments, office space, and retail, plus a new park for Chamblee.

?Health coverage costs are soon to rise for many Georgians. The state’s Department of Insurance has released a list of health care premium increases for 2016, and 11 of the hikes are in the double digits. The highest premium increase will be for individuals with Alliant Health Plans, who will have to pay as much as 29.6% more.

?Joe Biden is probably not going to run for president. During his visit to Atlanta yesterday, he said he is not sure he has the “emotional energy” to campaign.

?Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, is now in jail after her contempt hearing.”Tell the judge he’s a butt,” she said after the ruling.
