City to expand bike share program in Midtown, Downtown

Twelve more ‘hubs’ will be added at MARTA stops and Piedmont Park before coming to West End, AUC

City officials say more than 1,400 residents and visitors have hopped on the baby blue rental bikes stationed throughout Midtown and Downtown and have pedaled roughly 9,200 miles since June. Now the city wants to add more stations to make even more two-wheelers available to Atlantans.

City Hall is expanding Relay, Atlanta’s bike share program, to 12 additional locations in the dense neighborhoods before the end of the year. Those locations include:

  • Piedmont Avenue and Auburn Avenue Station in Downtown Atlanta
  • Marietta Street and Forsyth Street Station in Downtown Atlanta
  • Centennial Olympic Park at Park Avenue Station in Downtown Atlanta
  • Peachtree Center Avenue and International Boulevard Station in Downtown Atlanta
  • Civic Center MARTA Station in Downtown Atlanta
  • North Avenue MARTA Station in Downtown Atlanta
  • Bobby Dobb Station in Midtown Atlanta
  • Tech Square Station in Midtown Atlanta
  • Midtown MARTA Station in Midtown Atlanta
  • 10th Street and Myrtle Street Station in Midtown Atlanta
  • 11th Street and Crescent Avenue Station in Midtown Atlanta
  • Piedmont Park at 14th Street Station in Midtown Atlanta

“Launching the next phase of bike stations is exciting news, and signifies that the City of Atlanta and our partners are committed to making cycling an integral part of Atlanta’s transportation system,” Mayor Kasim Reed said in a statement. “The Relay program will offer 500 bikes at more than 50 stations citywide, and allow for first-and-last-mile connectivity from MARTA stations and business and shopping districts.”

City officials say once the new locations are up and running the program will expand to Atlanta’s Westside, including stations in West End. The city, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, Red, Bike and Green, WeCycle, and Urban Perform partnered last year to hire 10 “Bike Share Champions” — all of whom reside in Westside neighborhoods — to advocate for biking and the bike share program in those communities.

Becky Katz, the city’s chief bicycle officer, say community feedback and surveys have helped them selected from 9 to 12 potential locations from English Avenue to the West End, including the Atlanta University Center. After the champions help gather information and community feedback, the city will more forward with permitting and station installation. The goal, depending on the weather, is to install the stations between December and March.

“It is our goal to ensure that every community in the City of Atlanta can access this fantastic transportation option and I’m excited to work with the Bike Share Champions and local community members to site stations and remove barriers to using the system,” says Katz.
