From the venue:

When Noname released Telefone in 2016, critics recognized her as a powerful force in young hip-hop. With her debut LP Room 25, the Chicago rapper matched the critical hype with a singular ability to tell stories. Her vocal style floats between honeyed spoken-word musings and rap confessionals, gracing songs with refreshing intimacy that allows listeners to paint themselves into her experiences. On the single “Don’t Forget About Me,” stabs of humor buoy the emotional weight of her words with lines such as, “Your momma at the table cryin/All her hair gone/Feeling fishy/Finding Chemo/Smoking seaweed for calm.” The production is just as captivating with layers of R&B hooks, ramshackle percussion, and chord progressions reminiscent of ’60s-era Miles Davis. Noname’s style sounds familiar and like nothing else — a nearly impossible balancing act that she performs with ease. — Paul DeMerritt
