Influenced by 21st century life in and around the Arabian Gulf, Sophia Al Maria’s works often take the form of writing, film, and visual arts. Her newest solo exhibit, Between Distant Bodies, opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York earlier this year and discusses the intersections of technology, culture, and identity in the Arabian Gulf. She coined the term “Gulf Futurism” to describe urban advancements alongside environmental damage and conservative pushback in the region. ART PAPERS hosts Al Maria for a presentation of her work followed by a Q&A session on identity and the Global South led by writer Shumon Basar.
