Rob's House Records

Catalog covers smattering of brightest underground stars

Over the last year, Rob's House Records has grown from a fledging indie start-up to releasing nearly 20 7-inch singles. The label's catalog covers a smattering of Atlanta's brightest underground artists, including Anna Kramer and the Selmanaires to Deerhunter and the Black Lips. This weekend, Rob's House hosts a three-day release party for five new singles from God's America, Thee Crucials, Zano and solo recordings by Herb and Jason Harris of the Selmanaires. The latter two are the first of a white-sleeve jukebox series that's being overseen by Rob's House's recently acquired partner, Travis Flagel. The idea for the series was hatched when Flagel was touring with the Selmanaires last spring. "Each night, Herb played these songs he had written and I was totally floored," Flagel says. "I thought, 'This needs to be heard!'"

??
The format is a low-cost outlet for the Harris brothers' songs that stray from the eclectic pop of the Selmanaires. Herb's single wanders into traditional country in the vein of Johnny Cash or Blind Willie Johnson. Jason's songs straddle a line between Sgt. Pepper's-era Beatles pop and Motown soul.

??
In the coming months, Rob's House will release a posthumous 7-inch by former Swell Maps vocalist Nikki Sudden, as well as singles by the Carbonas, Classic Plus and a split release by Cole Alexander (Black Lips) and Bradford Cox (Deerhunter).

??
In September, the label plans to begin recording Anna Kramer's second full-length at Zero Return. "We're going to slow down after the 7-inches are out," says label founder Trey Lindsay. "We need to put more time and money into Anna's record, and give it the kind of promotion a full-length release deserves."
