The Endangered: The Endangered EP
Music180
Some artistic introductions announce a new talent worth watching. With a five-song EP, the Endangered tease us with one such debut. With Steven Miller (Pink, Jack Johnson) behind the boards, the EP has a round and undeniably polished acoustic rock and soul feel. Still, the hard, driving funk their talent suggests seems mostly buried beneath the full-figured band's smoothed-out sound. The band, featuring creamy alto Maiya Sykes, guitarist Nick Block, bassist Frank Abraham, and drummer Gene Coye, writes compelling lyrics with subtext, even on relationship fare like "Dollars." While the mature R&B of "Calling On You" leads the singles charge, "You'll Be Mine" demonstrates the bliss of discovering come-up artists. (3 out of 5 stars)
