Fahamu Pecou talks curating Elevate and MARTA

In an interview with “Switchyards: The Podcast” host Clay Bolton, the visual artist Fahamu Pecou formally announced that he’d be curating Elevate, working under the theme of “F(orever) I L(ove) A(tl) — F.I.L.A.”

? “We’re celebrating all things Atlanta,” Pecou said. “I hope to bring the quality of the fusion of various genres of art and the history of Atlanta’s creative richness to bear in that event.”

? Pecou’s been on fire of late. After his first major museum show at the High Museum (Imagining New Worlds), he was chosen for the En Route program, an initiative from WonderRoot, MARTA, and the TransFormation Alliance to bring public art to local train stations. The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) released details in a newsletter at the end of July, but there hasn’t been a slew of announcements for Elevate. In the interview Pecou confirmed that Elevate will take place Oct. 16-23, in the Fairlie-Poplar district.

As for the En Route program, the first community engagement meeting for the King Memorial station is taking place this Thurs., Aug. 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Ashley Auburn Pointe Apartments (Community Room). An artist who prides himself at working “in the spirt of collaboration,” Pecou’s ready to have those public arts dialogues.

? “I’m really looking forward to listening more than anything,” he said. “Of course I have ideas based off the work that I’m already doing and I’m looking forward to being able to present my work to these various communities and hearing their thoughts and listening for how I can engage them in a really meaningful way.”

? Along with this year’s Elevate theme know that there will be a block party in Woodfruff Park, an Organized Noize/Dungeon Family exhibition at Gallery 72, rooftop parties, and more than 16 visual and performing arts installations. Follow Fresh Loaf for updates.
