First Slice 12-29-15: 2 Chainz struck gold with Dabbin’ Santa sweaters

Proceeds from the $2 million in sales generated went to charitable donations for area families during the holidays

?Forbes interviewed 2 Chainz about his Dabbin’ Santa Ugly Christmas Sweaters, which generated $2 million in revenue over the holidays. Chainz attributed it to a confluence of factors: “This is just timing meets opportunity. There’s the whole dab thing, and Atlanta’s always been somewhere that actually moves the culture a little bit. We have been the backbone of hip-hop for the past couple years. So with dabbing coming out of Atlanta, it just began to grow legs and start moving on its own.” The accompanying Dabbin Santa app is apparently the fastest-cleared app in Apple history, according to Chainz, who used some of the funds generated from the sweater sales for charitable donations to area families through his T.R.U. Foundation.

Young women living alone comprise the bulk of Atlanta’s rental market. Half of all renters statewide pay more than 30 percent of their income in rent, according to a study by Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. The lower class isn’t suffering alone. “While rental cost burden is being felt most strongly by low-income families, even moderate-income renters who earn as much as $45,000 per year are feeling the pinch, particularly in urban markets,” the report’s authors state.
