The lines between digital life and “real” life are blurred. I can wake up in the morning in Durban as I scroll down my Instagram feed and peep my best friend’s international trekking. By about noon I’m on Twitter watching @rihanna clap back at Internet trolls and later on in the evening. If I’m feeling a little nostalgic, I’ll round off the day by wishing people I haven’t seen in years a happy birthday on Facebook. You can be, or at least feel like you are, connected to everyone, everywhere, at all times, these days.
Regardless of how we may feel about all the digital resources we have access to, there’s no doubt that they’re shaping our world. In order to explore how digital communication is impacting us and what it all might mean, Fall Line Projects, the new initiative of independent Atlanta based photobook publisher Fall Line Press, preps to release an upcoming zine called IRL (that’s Internet speak for “in real life”), in which artists interpret and explore how our digital lives affect our personal lives. The effort was founded with the intention to create a contemporary community of artistic expression through various forms of programming, deviating from the photo books the house normally publishes. In other words, through things like zines, folios, and smaller publications, Fall Line Press gives artists the opportunity to showcase their work in an alternative way.
In order to give artists that opportunity, specifically through a publication like IRL, Fall Line Projects needs support. So they’re throwing a fundraiser party to help get the zine going. The get-down celebrates and features artists whose work will be included in the zine, among them are photographer Patricia Villafañe, artist and writer Gently Yoused, and printmaker Tikva Lantigua. There will be eight featured artists in total and their works will be on display and up for sale, along with Fall Line Press photobooks. Aside from the art, the IRL launch party will also include a DJ, food, and a raffle.
Although our society is becoming increasingly digitized — and you might be able to catch a recap of the IRL fundraiser on someone’s Snapchat video — going out for a good cause never goes out of style.
