The new outdoor home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE AT ENCORE PARK, is perfect for north Atlantans overwhelmed with $4 per gallon gasoline treks to downtown con-cert venues. The $35 million amphitheater seats more than 12,000 and covers 45 acres in Alpharetta, yet the shows feel intimate. An impressive upcoming lineup includes John Mayer in August, O.A.R. in September, and the Black Crowes and Phil Lesh in October. Plus, the three separate public parking lots allow for a nearly hassle-free exit that cuts your idle time in half. The best perk? Clean, low-humidity restrooms.

OK, so you are a kid in the suburbs who loves loud rock and roll. Where do you go? Get your punk ass to SWAYZE’S, junior. It’s everything a club should be. Loud, obnoxious and a helluva lot of fun. Yes, it’s named for actor Patrick Swayze, and that’s part of the kitschymore...
OK, so you are a kid in the suburbs who loves loud rock and roll. Where do you go? Get your punk ass to SWAYZE’S, junior. It’s everything a club should be. Loud, obnoxious and a helluva lot of fun. Yes, it’s named for actor Patrick Swayze, and that’s part of the kitschy appeal of the place. Booker Lee Satterfield runs it with the same tongue-in-cheek humor as he employs when he fronts the chaotic band Treephort. The all-ages, all the time place hosts several bands per night, so there is something there to enjoy, just stick around and watch.

In the evolution of Atlanta blues clubs, DARWIN’S doesn’t have to monkey around with trendy come-ons. The no-frills roadhouse bar is the perfect setting for the gritty, dance-dammit insistency of the international touring acts who frequent the place. It’s a haven for jamming, too. Ya just never know who might show up for a surprise show or just to hang out. It’s not too far off the beaten path, either. Just a mile east of the Big Chicken, the club draws intown purists and rowdy partiers, all intent on having a good time. And Darwin’s always delivers the rockin’ blues for all comers. “1598 Roswell Road, Marietta. 770-578-6872. www.darwinsblues.com”
