Flash back 15 years ago. The words “East Atlanta” described little more than the swath of land on the far side of Moreland Avenue. Freedom Parkway was nothing but a concept. Decent grocery stores were sequestered OTP — or at least way north of Ponce. Is the G-word really such a bad thing? GENTRIFICATION has brought Atlanta better nightlife, better shopping, better housing and a better approximation to a living, breathing city. With more planning — particularly regarding public transportation and pedestrian-friendly streets — and a little loosening up (we’re talking about the city’s un-city-like crackdown on nightlife), the next 15 years could bring an even more vibrant Atlanta. less...

It’s Easy To Buy A Home Here
OK, so it’s getting harder to buy a kick-ass pad in a stable ‘hood for less than $200,000. But if you’re willing to pioneer a bit, IT’S EASY TO BUY A HOME HERE. Unlike the young and upwardly mobile in Boston, D.C., L.A. or (gasp!) San Francisco, all of whom would give up their firstborn and iPods to have a crack at buying “anything” with running water, twentysomething professionals with average-paying jobs can and do buy houses in Atlanta. With a median home price of $142,000 and a glut of mid-century bungalows, why are you renting? less...

Gays
Take a look around Atlanta. What makes it so pleasant, traffic and smog aside? Decent galleries and theaters? Fine restaurants, perhaps? Manicured yards? Hot bodies? And, what, might you ask, is behind all those things? In a word: GAYS. Gays make Atlanta great. They shape its fashion sense. They lendmore...
They lend it cultural depth. They make it smell pretty. Like they say on “Queer Eye,” a city without queers is like a medicine cabinet without exfoliating cream. Without gays, we’d all be nose-hair-flaunting, tastelessly decorated, bad-skinned, hopelessly dressed losers with bad hair. Thank you, gays. You make Atlanta hot. less...

Potential
The same thing that makes this city so exciting is the thing that makes it so forbidding: POTENTIAL. The same thing that makes this city so exciting is the thing that makes it so forbidding: POTENTIAL. Look around at all the new construction in downtown and Midtown and Buckhead, from Decatur to the West End: Hey, in 10-15 years, Atlanta might have the densely populated inner core of an actual vibrant city. And with all the things that go with dense populations - walking districts, mass transit, 24-hour amenities - the city could truly become the cultural center it only hints at today. That is, if the next 10-15 years doesn’t instead turn Atlanta into an environmental disaster area, bereft of clean water and air, endlessly sprawling and with no end to car congestion in sight. less...
