Opened in 1904, Silver Moon Barber Shop has laid claim to being the “Oldest Black Shop in Atlanta.” While the once-bustling street has seen hard times, with most of the historic buildings losing their luster, the inside of the barbershop has held up over the years. The ambiance radiates the past, from the old-school barber chairs to the mirrors that line the walls. Silver Moon is noisy at the moment due to streetcar construction right outside its door - but it’s noise that’s accompanied by the promise of good things (hopeful) to come for embattled Sweet Auburn. The past heroes of the avenue might not recognize anything were they to walk along the corridor, but they would remember Silver Moon. During the 107 years that a barber’s pole has hung outside Silver Moon Barber Shop many things have changed, but inside Sweet Auburn still thrives. less...

Our city boasts a healthy supply of coiffeurs who know how to transform a hirsute mess into a dapper, clean-cut gent. Very few, however, can accomplish that for less than $20. Say hello to AXIOM SALON FOR MEN. Known for its friendly stylists and walk-ins-welcome policy, the Piedmont Heights salon offers deals as low as $18. Uneven facial hair? They’ll craft your beard for $8. And for the more fussy among us who require a bit of color and eyebrow sculpting, Axiom’s staff is happy to wrap your tips in foil and give you a villain-esque arch. If you’re into that sort of thing. 1874 Piedmont Road. 404-815-0404. www.axiomsfm.com. less...

Generally, barbershops are decorated with mounds of hair piled along the floor, stacks of outdated magazines lying about, and old, broken TVs precariously placed on old, broken furniture. ROYAL CROWN BARBERSHOP, however, bucks the stereotype by providing a pretty grooming environment. Brought to you by the creators of the Soul Vegetarian restaurants, Royal Crown is beautifully adorned with hardwood floors, new furniture, large TV monitors and current periodicals. Oh, and the haircuts, which always come with a complimentary scalp massage, aren’t bad, either. “889 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. 404-758-4283.” less...

While the cost of a stay at this multi-purpose boarding establishment may run a bit high (the old “30 dollars or 30 days” model is, sadly, a thing of the past), a wide array of complimentary services available to those who find themselves sojourning here, including a tonsorial salon. Although the range of styles may be somewhat limited — there’s the “buzz,” the “skint-sidewall flop-top” the “take that, smartass” fade and, of course, the ever-popular “Michael Jordan” (formerly the “Telly Savalas”). The wait’s never too long. While you’re there, check out the free tattoo and body-piercing services, too. less...
