Cinco de Mayo 2025: Events in Atlanta

The annual celebration held May 5 to celebrate Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. A day of pride in Mexico, north of the border, most of us in the US celebrate it eating tacos and doing tequila shots.

Don’t fear, now is your chance to learn so that you can avoid embarrassment in later years! It’s a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is a commemoration of Mexico’s Independence Day, when in fact, it’s actually a remembrance of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French during the 1862 Battle of Puebla. So when you’re celebrating this important day in Mexico’s history, don’t forget what made it all happen.
