Gucci Mane: the ‘Trap God’ returns

Anyone still doubting Gucci’s Career Day credentials should take a look at his work ethic

Image Last night, just as the State of the Union was winding down, Gucci Mane released his first mixtape of 2013, Trap God 2. At 23 tracks, it’s a typically dense listen, and many of his regular collaborators show up to do their parts, from beatmakers Zaytoven and Mike Will Made It to his Brick Squad colleagues, Waka Flocka and Young Scooter. It’s the Squad’s newest member, Young Thug, though, who really impresses, with a manic, restless energy that makes the celebrity guest verses courtesy of Lil Wayne and Wiz Khalifa seem phoned-in. Other highlights include “When I Was Water Wippin” and the night-driving, Moroder vibe of “Scholar.” Anyone still doubting Gucci’s Career Day credentials should take a look at his work ethic.
