Fielded's favorite memories of touring the South

Fielded plays 529 tonight (Wed., May 8)

Lindsay Powell, aka of San Francisco's Fielded, is playing her third Atlanta show tonight. We met years ago at a DIY craft party in Chicago - I learned how to tie knots! - and thanks to the magic of touring we've crossed paths in Atlanta a few times now. She's bounced around - Beep Beep, 529, and WonderRoot - and each show has always been better than her last. Her voice fills a room and cascades over and into a jumble of rhythmic loops. The music and vocals are full of melodies both beautiful and haunting and make me wish my prom played cool music like this and we all danced around, eyes closed, without a care in the world. (I tripped on my date trying to "grind" to Nelly). Lindsay always leaves a strong impression, and we caught up with her while she was driving to Nashville to see what top 5 memories the South has given her during her years on the road.

In no particular order ...

1. The first drive into New Orleans by way of Houston was one of the most incredible I've ever experienced. We hadn't slept and we were rolling into the bayou around 6 or 7a.m. in mid-August. The mist surrounded us and everyone in the van was asleep. I had goosebumps and the landscape was literally breathtaking. I felt like I was watching a late-night spell casting ritual wind down for the rising of the sun.

2. Eating at Bailey & Cato's, a local meat and three in Nashville, TN, for the first time. The banana pudding was what sent me over the edge and into a two-hour long nap. I can still taste that deep-fried catfish.

3. Buying meat on a stick from a woman at a rest stop in Texas wearing all pink after she'd asked, "Y'all like to party?" The wall of the bbq joint had articles following the seizing and capturing of a serial killer from some middle-of-nowhere town in Texas that spanned ten to fifteen years. It was really good sausage.
