Mighty High Coup's 'Dark Side of the Boom' arrives today
Ricky Raw, A-Bomb, and Mr. SOS release an album beamed straight from the future
There’s a countdown going on over at ClubTapes.com zeroing in on the 1 p.m. EST release of Mighty High Coup’s third album, Dark Side of the Boom. If last year’s Boom Rap was a contemporary revision of slow and low bass music, Dark Side... is straight from the future. On the one hand Ricky Raw, Mr. SOS, and A-Bomb are less concerned with flaunting their propensity for going ham — the medium has become the message. Here they've stylishly crafted verses that dovetail the staccato juke (jook?) and trap-inspired beats that take this album to the next level.
?
There’s also a parade of producers on display here (J. Padron, Wes Green, RadioActive kids, Trill Bass, and the Treasury aka Treasure Fingers), resulting in a tasteful and somewhat spacious production. These qualities, paired with the the hip-hop cadences they’ve crafted, culminate in what is most definitely MHC’s most diverse album so far. Highlights include “I Got That," “Write A Song About Me," "Makin Moves In Atlanta," and “Wobble Dance Party,” and I would be remiss if I didn't mention "Add It Up" if for no other reason than the Violent Femmes nod.
?
Sure there’s an element of blunted-out fantasy and glorification of club life villainy going on here, but that's just par for the course. These guys walk the walk, and with Dark Side of the Boom the've curated a fun album that’s a natural addition to the old school nostalgia of Mighty High Coup’s past while looking boldly at the future of club music with a sound that’s more than just rhythms and boom.
