NOTED ACTS

ATLANTIS MUSIC CONFERENCE — See articles.

TONY BENNETT, DIANA KRALL, ASO — The vocal jazz event of the summer, featuring two headliners with massive popularity, not surprisingly sold out months ago. Comely singer and inventive pianist Krall seemed to emerge from nowhere when her string-laden When I Look Into Your Eyes began a non-stop, 32-week residency atop Billboard’s jazz album list. The 75-year-old Bennett needs no introduction as the living personification of sophistication. His entry into the MTV world was one of the ’90s more fascinating, yet puzzling, examples of his timeless cool as well as cross-genre appeal. The crooner’s recent interpretative albums (of Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra) are some of his best work in a remarkable 50-year career. You’re guaranteed a classy show, but adding the ASO to the mix plops a delicious cherry atop an already delectable evening. Chastain Park Amphitheater (Horowitz)

CHARLES WALKER & JOHNNY JONES SOUL & BLUES REVUE — Veteran rhythm & bluesman Charles Walker recorded for Chess and Decca records back in the day and also spent some time as a staff songwriter at Motown. He’s got a new CD, Leavin’ This Old Town, which marks his 40th year in music. He’s joined by another long-time Nashville musician, blues guitarist Johnny Jones, and a full band for a night of soul and blues. Rib Shack Café/Tucker (Sarig)

EXPO2000 — Athens label Kindercore celebrates its 50th release in four years with four nights of shows. Tonight’s lineup includes the Great Lakes, the Four Corners and Richard Davies. 40 Watt Club/Athens (Smith)

RORSCHACH TEST — Though self-described as a “techno-industrial rock band,” this Seattle combo, despite the occasional electronic flourish, are really just plain old metal. The beat is hard ‘n’ heavy, the guitars dirty, the vocals indiscernible and the lyrics fall into typical downer/outcast territory. What’s more interesting than the band’s music is the story of their unlikely genesis. Apparently Rorschach Test mastermind James Baker was a seminary school graduate defrocked by the church for heresy. Sounds like the ultimate heavy-metal creation myth to me. Masquerade (Robertson)

SNAKE RIVER CONSPIRACY — See review. Masquerade (Horowitz)

SWINGIN’ MEDALLIONS — Southern beach music comes to “the Beach” — or at least the closest thing to it in Clayton County. South Carolina’s Swingin’ Medallions have been around since the ’60s, when they scored a hit with “Double Shot of My Baby’s Love,” and they’re still causing spontaneous bouts of shagging throughout the Southeast. Clayton County International Park (Sarig)

TRUCKADELIC, DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, SLOBBERBONE — Three of the South’s rawest, raunchiest country rock bands team up tonight. Truckadelic are Atlanta cats with a spirit hotter than the brakes on a runaway Freightliner. The Drive-Bys are Athens’ answer to them, a buncha woebegone boys who must have grown up on a diet of Skynyrd 8-tracks and stolen bottles of Rebel Yell. Texas-based Slobberbone are the Lone Star State’s version, with a kinship so close that head-Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood actually appears on their new CD. Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)
