DANIEL CARTER/ANDREW BARKER/PAIGE MARTIN — Saxophonist Daniel Carter shines on the new William Parker Trio album, Painter's Spring. But it's really in his groups, Other Dimensions in Music (also with Parker) and TEST, where Carter takes full advantage of the interactive possibilities. Always eager to broaden his horizon, Carter has recently been interacting with dancer Paige Martin and percussionist Andrew Barker, who's been doing some collaborating of his own lately. As an integral part of the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra, Barker has utilized the talents of fellow members and saxophonists Rob Brown and Charles Waters in duo configurations. Tonight, though, Carter's spirited sax wailings should provide a fine canvas for Barker's amazing brushwork. Interaction at its most explorative. Earthshaking Music (Khalid)
THE QUEERS, THE EXPLOSION — Beats me why everyone keeps comparing California's Queers to the Ramones. Oh sure, there's a superficial similarity of approach (hyper-melodic punk pop), but where the Brothers R. infused their moronic tales of teenage lobotomies and baseball bats with sly wit, the Queers just end up sounding, well, moronic. Their new release, riddled with profanity and manufactured outrage, is a perfect archetype of style over substance. Rocket to Russia? Hah, they're barely a cab ride to Fresno. See review of the Explosion, p. 103. Echo Lounge (Robertson)
