NOTED ACTS
MR. C — Mr. C, the former member of the Shamen who could move any mountain, moves his "Subterrain" event (popularized at C's London club The End) stateside. C's set, captured on Mr. C Presents Subterrain 100% Unreleased, feature some of the finest tech-house, with a mix of Detroit techno, electro, deep baselines, dark breakbeats and acid-etched house. Any lucky soul who caught Mr. C's contemporaries Layo & Bushwacka! at Fusion will recommend others flock to catch this set. Crescent Room (Ware)
SMITHWICK MACHINE, DROPSONIC, TELEPATHICS — Forget the other bands on this bill; they are both great, sure, but the one to go see is the Telepathics. Shonali and Michele of Ultrababyfat anchor this group with the able aid of Turban-wearing "Congac the Magnificent." Don't ask who or why, just go for some Psychotic Reaction-ary Nuggets from this fun new side-project. Star Bar (Smith)
SOLO NIGHT AT THE ECHO — Individual players from a wide range of excellent local bands step into the solo spotlight this evening. Featured performers include Jon Byrd (Slim Chance and the Convicts), Cynthia Osbourne (the master cylinder of Elroy's Big Machine), Blake Rainey (the Young Antiques), Rob Mallard (Sky City), Kenny Howes (without the Yeah!) and Deke Dean (sans Blue Avenue). Doors open at 8 p.m. Echo Lounge (Nicoll)
PAUL VAN DYK — Recently named Rolling Stone's "Hot DJ," Germany's Paul van Dyk has been, along with BT and Paul Oakenfold, one of the foremost artists responsible for popularizing trance in America. For the most part van Dyk has done so by foregoing more traditional mix CDs for original productions, which fairly accurately represent his live set: melodic manipulation, heavy on the acid build-up. Using van Dyk's new album, Out There and Back, as a primer, expect the symphonic sweep associated with BT's progressive house mixed with the hard breakbeats of Way Out West with the occasional uplifting vocal. Van Dyk's last show at the Warehouse was anthemic and heavily attended. The Chamber (Ware)
