THU/OCTOBER 5
FOURPLAY — Their status as a jazz supergroup is understandable considering the players — pianist Bob James, bassist Nathan East, guitarist Larry Carlton and drummer Harvey Mason. Their contemporary, listener-friendly, sounds, found most recently on their seventh release, Yes, Please! will make their concert a treat for both the jazz connoisseur and the casual listener. Variety Playhouse (Baraka)
DAN HICKS AND THE HOT LICKS, JEREMY KAY — The swing’s the thing, so even though none of the original Hot Licks are along for the first Dan Hicks and the HL’s tour in 25 years, the affable, wacky frontman has a band complete with fiddle and female backing vocals that’ll sound just perfect on all the old songs. The new album shows that Hicks hasn’t lost a bit of his subtle, dry, self-deprecating humor or knack for tapping into ’40s pop, western swing, gypsy folk and low-key blues, often in the same tune. Opener Kay is a singer/songwriter with better-than-average songs sung with a remarkably soulful voice. Cotton Club (Horowitz)
LOVERBOY — Almost single-handedly these ’80s, Canadian corporate rockers erased every bit of musical goodwill our North American neighbors had racked up during the years they were shipping great Canuck exports like Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young across the border. Their cheese-headed hard-rock remains so devoid of charm, it makes Bryan Adams look downright exciting. Recommended for those who think puffy, middle-aged white guys singing songs with titles like “Hot Girls in Love” is enticing. Riviera (Robertson)
MORNING 40 FEDERATION, BULLY — A two-fisted wallop of edgy rock that challenges the mind while it kicks the derriere. Opening act Bully may well be the best band in Atlanta; their stage presentation suggests Metallica fronted by Woody Allen and Travis Bickle, but with both of ‘em disguised as John Popper. Star Bar (Nicoll)
MICHAEL TOLCHER & ASSEMBLY, JODIE MANROSS, JOHN FAYE — Local singer/songwriter Michael Tolcher and Jodie Manross of Knoxville, Tenn., were both impressive contestants in the most recent Open Mic Shootout at Eddie’s. Tonight’s 9:30 show will feature a special guest appearance by John Faye formerly of the Caulfields and currently of the John Faye Power Trip. It all makes for a breezy and pleasant autumnal evening. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
TRAVIS TRITT — With the “pretty boys” he railed against firmly entrenched in the hearts of fans, it seems there’s little room for self-made roughneck Travis Tritt in modern radio-friendly twang. Still, the Georgia native soldiers on, just like the outlaws and Southern rockers he’s so long championed. In fact, with a label jump to Sony and a hot new album, Down the Road I Go, Tritt’s never sounded stronger. Maybe there’s still some room for red-clay grit in Nashville’s squeaky-clean world. Forum/Rome (Thompson)
