SUN/OCTOBER 29
Noted acts
GEOFF ACHISON — See listing for Oct. 28. Fat Matt’s Rib Shack (Powell)
ATLANTA CHAMBER PLAYERS — See Earshot. Rialto Center (Brown)
BLACKALICIOUS — Matching lyrical genius to layered beats, Blackalicious (along with Quannum labelmates like Latryx and DJ Shadow) are the Black Star of the West Coast — intelligent and outspoken but with a completely unique flavor. Come see the Gift of Gab annihilate with alliteration. The Lifesavers, Minamina Goodsong with DJs Bing & Namahs and Creashun and Fari also perform. Show starts at midnight, after the house is cleared from the earlier Garrison Starr/Neilson Hubbard show. Smith’s Olds Bar (Ware)
COWBOY ENVY — Gather ‘round the campfire early for this 5:30 p.m. matinee show by three cowgirls who can spin a downright purty tune just as well as Roy, Gene, or even Dale. But be sure to duck real low when Frenchy breaks out her bullwhip during “High Ridin’ Woman”! Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
FUZZY SPROUTS — See article. Brandy House (Smith)
KEVIN LAWSON, MICHAEL MAGNO — Lawson’s got a rock-solid “rock star” persona, but his fine radio-ready songs are crafted with a folksinger’s deft touch. Opening act Magno is a superior singer/songwriter in his own right, but he’s also been known to sit in on keys and vocals with Lawson (and he appears on the impressive new Kevin Lawson Live CD). This is an 8 p.m. show. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
MISFITS, IMPOTENT SEA SNAKES, MURPHY’S LAW, PRIMATIVE REASON — You couldn’t pick a better show to celebrate Halloween. Despite the legal battles that prevented the Misfits from performing for the better part of a decade, the legendary horror punk band has continued to attract new fans over the past few years and has become a regular part of Dragon Con. The confrontational Sea Snakes have been performing for almost as long and are fresh off a summer European tour. Expect everything from zombies and aliens to cross dressers and strippers. Murphy’s Law and Primative Reason will open this Halloween extravaganza. There’s a $20 advance ticket price; the freak parade starts at 7 p.m. Masquerade (Williams/Nicoll)
SANDRA HALL TRIBUTE — See Talkin’ Blues. Blind Willie’s (Powell)
GARRISON STARR, NEILSON HUBBARD — Her debut album, Eighteen Over Me, had all the pretty-voice-and guitar-jangle of a Juliana Hatfield or Mary Lou Lord, but Mississippi native Garrison Starr is no Boston busker — she’s a spunky southern songwriting whose feminine, edgy tunes are as lyrically memorable as they are tuneful. When it comes to irony in songwriting, sometimes less is more, and Starr’s songbook is the picture of simplicity. Starr is touring with her Ol’ Miss classmate Neilson Hubbard, an acclaimed singer/songwriter is his own right, whose second album is out in January. Smith’s Olde Bar (York/Sarig)
