WED/NOVEMBER 22
Noted acts
BLUEGROUND UNDERGRASS, COL. BRUCE HAMPTON & THE CODE TALKERS — A jam band is a jam band is a jam band, but Blueground Undergrass deserves extra credit points for at least going beyond the root of the music (the Grateful Dead) to the roots’ root (bluegrass, folk, jazz). For BGUG’s pre-Thanksgiving “Turkey Jam” show, Col. Bruce Hampton & the Code Talkers share the bill. Brandyhouse (Sarig)
CITRUS — A very promising California alt-rock band whose sound suggests Radiohead and whose persona resembles Another Man Down. They’ve got an impressive new full-length CD titled Largo Divine and are currently being managed by former Atlantan Kiera Byrd (Hummer, Jack Black). Dark Horse (Nicoll)
CUT-THROATS NINE — Punk legend Chris Spencer of Unsane is back in action with yet another heavy-duty band named after an obscure Italian splatter movie. This cat’s sound has an edge wicked enough to pre-slice tomorrow’s turkey. The Earl (Nicoll)
KENNY HOWES & THE YEAH!, PINKEYE, TAYBACKS — Jangle-pop guru Howes continues his Wednesday residency, joined tonight by grrrl punk trio Pinkeye (imagine a real-life version of the end-credits band from the Charlie’s Angels movie) and the Vic-toriously rugged rock ‘n’ roll of the Taybacks. Star Bar (Nicoll)
FRANK LOWE, BILLY BANG & ABBEY RADER — Veteran purveyor of free jazz, tenor saxophonist Frank Lowe’s recordings have ranged anywhere from savage to sublime. His sound can change from shriek to sweet in a split second. Among the many collaborators included in his impressive resume are Don Cherry, Rashied Ali and Joseph Jarman, to name a few; not to mention his numerous recordings with master violinist Billy Bang. Bang and percussionist Abbey Radar have been touring together for over a year now, perfecting their improvisational skills as a team. The addition of Lowe should prove to be a welcome and rare treat. Flicker Theater/Athens (Khalid)
