The former hotel’s located across the street from GSU’s University Commons. No word if the powers-that-be plan to keep the pool.

From the Atlanta Business Chronicle:

Georgia State University bought the adjoining former Wyndham Garden Hotel and The Baymont Inn and Suites at 175 Piedmont Avenue for an undisclosed amount.

The university plans to convert the properties, which have 453 rooms, into student housing.

The broker who advised the seller says it’s a plus for downtown hotels, which now have less competition in what’s probably the worst years the Atlanta hospitality industry’s ever experienced. We say the more folks who live downtown, the better.

ADDED FOR THE WONK FACTOR: The university would do a lot more for downtown if it turned the parking lot into dorms. Build them close to the street and rent out the retail space.
