GSU selects site near Woodruff Park for law and business schools, continues quiet invasion of downtown
School's 2.4 acres at John Wesley Dobbs and Park Place will boost downtown presence
Folks praying to the gods for more foot traffic for downtown Atlanta are in luck. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle (sub. req'd.), Georgia State University wants to build two future buildings that will house its business and law schools on a site near Woodruff Park:
Georgia State recently purchased about 2.4 acres at John Wesley Dobbs and Park Place, on the north side of Robert W. Woodruff Park. GSU paid $17.8 million for the site, or roughly $7.2 million an acre (or about $169 per land square foot), according to the university and Databank Inc., which tracks metro Atlanta real estate transactions. ...
It is another example of GSU’s desire to relocate some of its biggest programs around Woodruff Park. The university may also consider moving its college of Arts and Sciences to the former SunTrust Tower, which GSU now owns.
Before we start doing backflips and chairdances, keep in mind that the General Assembly must allocate funds before construction can take place. Regardless, the purchase — which follows GSU's acquisition last year of two downtown hotels for student housing — only builds on the university's already sizable downtown footprint. Now if they could only do something about that fight song...
