Mayor Kasim Reed on Wednesday is expected to announce a competition to help convert a vacant lot across the street from City Hall into an urban farm. Via the city’s Office of Sustainability:

This competition is aimed at transforming the acreage of land directly across from City Hall into a thriving demonstration farm. As a key part of the City’s Power to Change sustainability plan and its commitment to bring local food to the tables of our residents, we are excited to bring a competitive spirit to this innovative project.

The 1.3-acre site at Trinity and Central avenues was once home to the Atlanta Municipal Court. According to a spokesman for the sustainability office, the project will take up the entire lot.

UPDATE, 8/25/11, 10:57 a.m.: Wal-Mart has agreed to invest $35,000 to sponsor the design competition. For more details about contest registration and submission requirements, visit the farm project’s website.
