The founder of celebrated California brewery Lagunitas, Tony Magee, issued a rather public rant this week after, apparently, receiving a cease and desist letter from SweetWater Brewing Company concerning the use of “420” on their bottles. Magee’s story, embedded below, is equal parts angry rant, insider beer talk, pothead pissing contest, and a mild call for civility. The whole thing is entertaining without knowing the parties involved. Considering that both breweries come from that mid-nineties West Coast smoking-bowls-and-drinking-brews culture, though, it reads as a fascinating insight to an industry that’s coming of age.

I’ve reached out to SweetWater for comment and will update the post if and when they respond.

In the world of crowded spaces, a brewery out of Atlanta sent me a letter today demanding that we never ever use the term 420 again...
