Walking down the streets of downtown Atlanta alongside Daenerys Targaryen or the Doctor during Labor Day weekend has become more and more common as DragonCon continues to grow. First organized in 1987, the multi-genre convention has become one of the largest in the Southeast, bringing guests like Carrie Fisher and Patrick Stewart to the city throughout the years. This year, DragonCon’s guests include the original Captain Kirk, William Shatner, the eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, and Cercei Lannister herself, Lena Headey.

To kick off Labor Day weekend, bid adieu to summer and say hello to Georgia’s new brewery laws, Arches plans to release a handful of limited Belgians and one-off beers. There will also be live music and artisanal sausage sandwiches and sides from Choripan Sausage Co.
Decatur Book Festival

The AJC Decatur Book Festival is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the five largest overall. Since its launch, more than 1,000 world-class authors and hundreds of thousands of festival-goers have crowded the historic downtown Decatur square to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, live music, parades, cooking demonstrations, poetry slams, writing workshops, and more. Stop by local bookseller Little Shop of Stories, located right in the square, to pick up a guide and discover this neighborhood gem, baby books through adult, fiction and non-fiction. The kids’ imaginations can run wild, exploring the Good Night Moon room and visiting Harry Potter’s Platform 9 3/4.

When the nerds of the world converge on the Dirty South you know Hamiltunes ATL needs to be in the mix. Hamiltunes ATL presents CONtinental Congress its biggest event ever right across the street from Dragon*Con. Costumes of all kinds are encouraged.
