Poet-hero, E.T.A. Hoffmann, regales his drunken fraternity brothers with three stories of his greatest romances.tales that depict the struggle between human love and an artist's dedication to his work. Though Hoffmann cannot keep any of these women happy, he does gain poetic inspiration-the ability to transform pain and loss into art.
