After retiring, Clough began investigating what the Smithsonian collections could tell him about South Georgia, where he spent most of his childhood. His investigations revealed animal, plant, fossil and rock specimens, along with cultural artifacts and works of art—far more than he had imagined. He found that the objects illustrated important aspects of southern culture, and how museum archives help intertwine family, community and natural history.
