CRITIC’S PICK: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Vessel is one of the best local bands in the scene right now. The art punk foursome is known best for their lively tunes full of fluttery horns and danceable bass riffs. Lead vocalist and drummer Alex Tuisku holds each song together with their new wave rhythm and harmonious vocal tone but what really makes these folks special is the clear in-sync connection they have with each other, both on and off stage. Vessel is the latest export of dynamic and tight-grooved yet exploratory post-punk coming out of Atlanta. Building on a rich history of Athens art school punk and the reckless abandon of Atlanta DIY, the band is adept in their craft of calculated, yet danceable indie rock ready to break the mold. Each instrument in Vessel moves with the others in lockstep, a simultaneous motion not unlike gears rotating to operate a machine—but the end result is not mechanical. Instead, it is joyous and lively: something to move to. It’s dance music for bookish types, rock for the stressed and well dressed, punk for those who can’t and won’t stand still in our gentrified malaise.
