CRITIC’S PICK: Gwen Gunter: What If, Alan Avery Art Company - Atlanta-based SCAD grad Gwen Gunter creates geometric paintings featuring irregular shapes that are animated by lines and bright colors; her work is described as whimsical and deliberate. Gunter chose the title ‘What If’ in order to adopt “a world of possibilities that lie beyond what we already know,” she says. “This mindset encourages us to take risks and create something new and unexpected.” - Kevin C. Madigan

From the venue:

Alan Avery Art Company is pleased to present a solo exhibition from David Clifton-Strawn, ECCE HOMO, a reevaluation of the traditional art of portraiture through the modern queer lens. The artist will be present for the opening.

ECCE HOMO offers a multifaceted exploration of male and LGBTQ+ identity. David Clifton-Strawn juxtaposes the queer narrative against the rich tapestry of Renaissance art and the elegance of fashion and editorial photography, crafting a nuanced exploration of identity. From men placed in contexts simultaneously vulnerable and powerful to the commanding presence of drag queens, this exhibition celebrates the beauty and diversity that enrich our world.

“The body of work. Primarily encompasses men from all aspects of their physical identity, crossing and breaking boundaries of what society has dictated they as men should be, identify as, act as, wear, sounds like, participate in and yes, even who and how they love. David has a way of spiritually connecting with his subject bringing out the relaxed and true individual, not often revealed and never captured. I am sure when the shoot is over, sometimes even a surprise to the subjects themselves... The result is a raw, honest, magical images of life in its most rare state, depictions of subjects you’ll want to know, who will make you rethink the perception and redefine what is acceptable, and a collection of works that will once viewed will have you saying, almost out-loud “ECCE HOMO” - BEHOLD THE MAN!”
