CRITIC'S PICK:

Cooper & Gorfer / Andrew Moore, Jackson Fine Art - The portraiture of Swedish duo Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer extends from hybrid creations assembled from photographs, textures, textiles, and painting, to video experiments. Collage is a fundamental element of Cooper and Gorfer's work. They explained that each portrait in their show "Altered Gaze" is constructed from fragments, a medley of what has been lived, loved, lost. "The collages mirror how we become who we are: assembled from hidden seams, exposed wounds, and the quiet architecture of our histories." Andrew Moore is recognized for his photographic series taken over the course of many years, showing the effects of time on natural and fabricated structures. Running concurrently with "Altered Gaze," Moore's Jackson exhibition "Theater" consists of eight large-scale illustrations which "capture the poetic beauty and grandeur of theatrical spaces and their decay." Moore composes images of sites where architecture, memory, and human presence converge, he says. "I'm always trying to leave space in my pictures for the viewer to have these different emotions happening at the same time and to have to find your way." - Kevin C. Madigan
