CRITIC’S PICK: Kristian Bush, Eddie’s Attic—Mr. Billy Pilgrim/Sugarland returns for another set of holiday shows at Eddie’s. It’s a given that, along with his own music, Bush typically invites local musician friends, so you never know who’s going to swing by. He’ll be doing four performances of his upbeat roots/pop between Sugarland dates. You’ll surely hear some of the 52 songs he wrote for his 52nd birthday a few years back and even a Pilgrim track or two. It’s all buoyant, goes down easy and akin to seeing a long lost friend arrive back home, at least for a few days.— Hal Horowitz

Kristian Bush is country music’s renaissance man. Adept at thriving on the genre’s fringes and delivering songs that speak to its contemporary heartbeat, Kristian continues to build his prolific and enviable career by stretching the norms, embracing creative freedom and never giving up.

Kristian is a multi-PLATINUM-selling, two-time GRAMMY® Award winner most known for co-founding the record-breaking country duo Sugarland with Jennifer Nettles. In 2015, he released his debut solo album “Southern Gravity,” home to his hit “Trailer Hitch.” He followed it up with a series of songs and albums, including his year-long project “52” that he began to roll out in 2022 in honor of his 52nd birthday. Kristian divided the 52-song collection into four volumes, released them over 12 months, and leaned into the eclectic influences he collected throughout his expansive music career.

“I’ve been given the opportunity to reinvent myself many times,” Kristian says. “And I’ve been grateful in every incarnation.”

Last summer, he drove his striped umbrella in the sand, staking his spot in summertime beach music with his EP “Drink Happy Thoughts.”

“(Beach music) is just fascinating,” Kristian says. “No matter who I talk to about this kind of stuff, it’s the same feeling I got when I would tell people I have a band called Sugarland. They’re like,’ Oh my God, I love Sugarland. That’s you?’ When people confess that you’re their guilty pleasure, it’s such a beautiful feeling. How about we normalize it? Beach music is one of my favorite things.”

Since then, Kristian has released a series of island versions of his popular songs that marry his signature groovy sound with his reggae influence.

“I feel somewhat like I stumbled into a relationship with listeners as the person who provides smiles,” Kristian says. “It happened early in the Sugarland world. We were writing positive songs at a time when things weren’t always that positive. Then it happened again when I became a solo artist.”

As he was working on his own music, Kristian was also busy in the studio producing Megan Moroney. Megan recently charted her first No. 1 song with the Bush-produced “Tennessee Orange.”

2024 marks Kristian’s 30th year in music – and the 20th anniversary of Sugarland’s signature hit “Baby Girl.”

The Sevierville, TN native launched his professional music career in 1994 with the Folk- Rock duo Billy Pilgrim. Within the decade, Kristian formed Sugarland, and the group released its debut single, “Baby Girl,” in 2004. Sugarland charted five No. 1 hits and 12 Top 10 songs. Kristian made a foray into television theme songs in 2016 with “Forever Now (Say Yes),” which he penned and performed for TLC’s popular show “Say Yes to the Dress.”

The multi-instrumentalist is also a founding member of Rock Jam band Dark Water alongside his brother Brandon Bush and esteemed guitarist Benji Shanks. In addition, Kristian co-wrote a song for the Atlanta staging of Stephen Schwartz’s “Working: A Musical” and has written three musicals. “Troubadour” (2017) and “Darlin’ Cory” (2021) opened at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, and “Me Before You.”
